Job Description:

Head of Scenic Design and InstructionThe Head of Scenic Design and Instruction is responsible for teaching fundamental stagecraft techniques, including set construction, scenic painting, and technical theater skills, to students enrolled in introductory stagecraft courses. The instructor will facilitate hands-on learning experiences in the scenic shop and provide theoretical and practical instruction to help students develop a foundational understanding of stagecraft.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop and deliver instructional materials for basic stagecraft courses, including lesson plans, demonstrations, and hands-on activities.
  • Instruct students in the safe and proper use of tools, equipment, and materials commonly used in theatrical construction and scenic design.
  • Demonstrate and teach basic carpentry, scenic painting, and other stagecraft techniques to students of varying skill levels.
  • Collaborate with other theater faculty to ensure alignment of curriculum with departmental goals and learning outcomes.
  • Assess student performance through practical assignments, projects, and examinations, and provide constructive feedback to support student growth.
  • Maintain a safe and organized workshop environment, including equipment maintenance and inventory management.
  • Support students in the development of their projects and guide design and construction processes.
  • Participate in departmental meetings, committees, and events as required.
    QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Bachelor's degree in Theater, Technical Theater, Fine Arts, or related field; master's degree preferred.
    • Prior teaching experience in basic stagecraft, set construction, or technical theater at the high school or college level.
    • Proficiency in a variety of stagecraft techniques, including carpentry, scenic painting, rigging, and stage lighting.
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and motivate students from diverse backgrounds.
    • Knowledge of safety protocols and best practices in theatrical workshop environments.
    • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and contribute to a positive and inclusive learning environment.POSITION TYPE: Full-Time
