Who You Are

You're a strong problem solver who loves digging into the details to fully understand what is going on. You have fixed a lot of problems, so you know how sort out what is meaningful and what is not to be as efficient as possible. You like getting your hands dirty and want to be the one disassembling a problem to find out what is broken and how to fix it. You enjoy working with others - collaborating and sharing knowledge & learnings with team members. You're agile and adaptable but work with precision to ensure we deliver top-notch customer experiences, always.

You have designed components from scratch and have managed them throughout the development process, getting them into high-volume production. You can create 3d and 2d representations of a part based on an idea from a whiteboard, and can effectively communicate the design intent and critical features with appropriate specifications to fabricate prototype samples of the part. Further, you can communicate with vendors around the world to understand and implement various DFM principles so our components can be produced successfully in high volumes. You want to work on a project where you can see the fruits of your labor come to life and enjoy seeing the finished product on the shelves of major retailers around the globe. You also have:

  • 10+ years of experience designing subassemblies & complex parts using CATIA V5 or similar 3D CAD system, creating 3D parts and assemblies and 2d technical drawings
  • Extensive knowledge of ASME Y14.5 2D drawing standard; proficient use of GD&T
  • Manufacturing knowledge & related experience to guide component & tooling design
  • Experience with various component manufacturing processes including injection molding, die casting, & metal stamping preferred
  • Experience performing dimensional tolerance stack ups
  • Hands-on ability & desire to build prototypes
  • Excellent organizational skills, and an ability to work multiple engineers and on multiple assignments concurrently
  • Strong Communication skills - to collaborate with vendors regarding their manufacturing process and DFM, to coordinate samples and prototype build schedules, and to contribute on a team of multiple designers and engineers supporting a common platform of motors
  • A desire to work in a fast-paced, high energy product development environment, where many ideas go from concept to store shelves in less than 2 years.

What You'll Do

As a Senior Designer, you'll be part of our Global Tools & Storage team located in Towson, MD. Specifically, you'll:

  • Design subassemblies & complex parts using CATIA V5.
  • Design parts according to various component manufacturing processes including injection molding, die casting, stamping, and machining
  • Set up BoM structure and maintain documentation in PLM system throughout the entire product life cycle
  • Create 2d technical drawings, applying GD&T when necessary, and performing dimensional tolerance stack-ups to guide the design and specifications
  • Build prototypes (hands-on) in a lab, and you'll coordinate fabrication of prototype parts and assembly fixtures or gauges as needed
  • Review measurements of components received from suppliers, and disposition whether or not parts are acceptable to use at various levels of builds
  • Evaluate prototype motors and power tools / lawn equipment (hands-on), take measurements, collect performance data, and collaborate with team members on analysis and next steps
  • Perform teardowns of competitive designs and test failures, and perform basic experiments to improve design output
  • Investigate design issues & test failures, and effectively identify, recommend, and implement corrective actions to components and/or mfg. process.
