What You Will Do:

The Senior Vice President of Patient Services (CNO) is a key member of the Executive Team and responsible for complete oversight of the medical center’s nursing operations, both inpatient and outpatient. The CNO reports directly to the President/CEO. This role provides strategic direction to the organization as it relates to regulatory compliance, evidence based practice and patient care. The CNO develops and implements the organization’s plan for providing nursing care to patients. This position works in close collaboration with other VP’s in all matters affecting the day-to-day operations of the hospital as well as in planning for the future and in establishing community linkages for health improvement. This position participates with leaders of the Board of Directors, executive, management, medical staff, and service line directors in planning, promoting, and conducting hospital wide quality assessment and performance improvement activities.

II. Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified.

Develops and implements strategy. In close cooperation with and subject to the approval of the President, works with senior management to establish objectives for the hospital and its operating departments/service lines toward the improvement of hospital services. With service line directors and Vice Presidents formulates hospital and departmental objectives: proposes new services and programs; determines personnel needs and space requirements for existing and proposed programs; reviews and makes recommendations to the Vice Presidents and President. Communicates hospital objectives, strategies, and plans to managers and associates. Ensures that each operating department and service line develops, maintains and uses short range plans suitable to its scope of service and objectives; ensures that such plans are in harmony with the hospitals overall objectives, plans and programs. Works with the President and other Vice Presidents concerning the acquisition of equipment, facilities, new construction and changes in space allocation.

Manages and oversees nursing operations, including design and implementation of nursing roles, work processes, and work flows to improve effectiveness and efficiency and support goals. Establishes effective controls for monitoring performance to establish standards. Reviews and evaluates existing hospital/nursing policies, procedures and work methods by means of periodic and special studies: directs the installation of approved work methods and procedures to ensure achievement of objectives. Ensures that clinical services meet or exceed established standards of care. Ensures that financial outcomes meet or exceeds established targets. Consults and collaborates with physicians, clinical departments, service lines in establishing policies/standards/procedures and quality outcomes for patient care. May be assigned additional departments and/or duties as necessary to support the overall hospital operations.

Responsible for organizing, directing and coordinating medical and health services in compliance with the government regulations and policies, including but not limited to both the state hospital licensing and nursing practice acts. Takes appropriate action on concerns reported by department staff related to compliance.

Develops, coordinates and provides leadership to patient care services. Develops and directs the departments within the scope of patient care services and establishes the responsibilities of positions reporting directly to the Vice President/Chief Nurse Officer. Selects, motivates and guides patient care services leadership team in the achievement of hospital’s strategic plan. Evaluates the performance of direct reports and establishes compensation levels. Participates in developing and implementing mechanisms for recognizing the expertise and performance of staff. Delegates authority commensurate with the responsibilities of patient care services leadership positions; ensures that scope of authority is clearly defined and understood; monitors direct reports performance and provides support and assistance as needed. Assures front-line participation in clinical decision making by establishing shared governance. Directs nursing administration and centralized staffing, including planning, budget and personnel management, policy development/implementation, and consultation with staff and senior management to ensure achievement of patient care and safety goals.

Provides leadership and direction on strategies to promote retention and recognition of excellence in nursing, including oversight and recommendations regarding staff rewards and development programs. Ensures the effective recruitment, selection, supervision, development and retention of patient care services management and employees. Ensures the department and service line directors/managers and other hospital associates are well qualified. Provides input and oversight of department/service line director’s performance relative to budgets and objectives. Assists directors in identifying ways of improving their performance. Utilizes 360 degree feedback process. Provides support to programs designated to develop managers skills and abilities necessary for performance improvement, as well as effective leadership. Collaborates with Human Resources on salaries and benefits for clinical personnel to ensure that they are commensurate with qualifications and in line with positions of comparable responsibilities within the organization and community.

Oversees planning and provision of continuing education, role specific competencies, and staff development to nursing staff. Implements clinical education requirements for nursing staff. Maintains professional development activities to keep registered nursing practice up to date on industry trends.

Promotes and fosters a multidisciplinary approach to patient care, and the coordination of care among disciplines. Maintains strong positive relationships with the hospital’s medical staff, and other constituency groups. Provides input into the standardization of nursing procedures across the System with the UMMS CNO Council, and other nursing leadership.

What You Need to Be Successful:

Education

Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (Required)

Master’s Degree in nursing, health administration, or MBA (Required)

State Registered Nurse License (Required)

Experience

6+ years progressive leadership experience (Required)

6+ years financial management experience (Required).

4+ years Knowledge of and compliance with Regulatory agencies (Federal and State) to include Joint Commission. (Required)
